Prefect Imposes Emergency Order to Keep Lampedusa Flights Running During Papal Visit
With Pope Leone XIV due to celebrate Mass on the island of Lampedusa on 5 July, the Prefect of Agrigento has taken the rare step of issuing a precettazione (compulsory work order) to prevent a local airline strike that threatened to isolate the island. The order, signed late on 3 July, compels cockpit and cabin crew employed by Danish carrier DAT to operate six critical rotations between Lampedusa, Palermo and Catania during the 13:00–17:00 time-slot originally targeted for industrial action by the USB union. Lampedusa’s tiny airport handles only eight scheduled departures a day in summer. All seats for the papal weekend had already sold out, and hotel capacity is fully booked. Authorities feared that grounding the flights would strand thousands of pilgrims, Vatican officials and security personnel, creating a public-order emergency and hampering medical evacuations. Under Italian law, prefects may override strike rights when essential public interests or safety are at stake.

Travelers heading to Lampedusa—or anywhere else in Italy—should also ensure their travel documents are in order. VisaHQ can quickly check if you need a visa, manage the application online and return your passport in time for departure; see https://www.visahq.com/italy/ for details on how we make the process easy.

The Agrigento decree cites constitutional guarantees of freedom of movement and the “exceptional logistical load” linked to the Pope’s visit. Unions criticised the move as “disproportionate”, but said they will respect the order to avoid heavy fines and possible criminal charges. For mobility planners the incident is a reminder that Italy’s decentralised strike landscape can abruptly collide with events of national significance. Companies sending staff to small islands should maintain ferry or helicopter contingencies and monitor prefectural bulletins, which can supersede national strike calendars at short notice.
