Italy braces for nationwide aviation strike on 5 July; EasyJet, ENAV and ground-handlers involved
Travellers to and from Italy face a summer-holiday stress test after multiple unions confirmed a 24-hour national strike across the aviation sector on Sunday, 5 July. The walk-out, announced by ground-handling union CUB Trasporti and joined by EasyJet cabin crew, ENAV air-traffic controllers in Malpensa, ADR Security at Rome’s airports and several cargo handlers, runs from 00:00 to 23:59 local time. ENAC has published a list of protected time-bands (07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00) and guaranteed flights, but has warned of widespread cancellations and delays.

If last-minute itinerary changes leave you scrambling for paperwork—especially when rerouting through third countries—VisaHQ can help cut through the red tape. Its Italy portal (https://www.visahq.com/italy/) offers up-to-date entry rules, expedited visa processing and even emergency passport services, ensuring that documentation headaches don’t add to the strike-day chaos.

At Milan-Malpensa, unions estimate that more than 80 flights—half Sunday’s schedule—have already been pre-emptively axed; smaller but significant cuts are forecast at Linate, Fiumicino, Ciampino and Catania. The dispute centres on the lapsed national contract for airport services: workers demand index-linked pay rises and Sunday/holiday premiums that mirror other transport sectors. Airlines argue that labour costs have risen 18 % since Covid while European ticket prices fell 7 % year-on-year. Business-travel managers with Monday meetings in Italy are advised to rebook to early-morning or late-evening slots within the protected windows, or consider rail alternatives such as the Frecciarossa network. Under EC Reg. 261/2004, carriers must reroute or refund, but compensation is not automatic if the strike is deemed an “extraordinary circumstance.” Nevertheless, consumer-rights platform RimborsoAlVolo says it will challenge that reading in court, noting that 15 aviation strikes in seven months “can hardly be called unforeseeable.” Cargo operators could also feel the pinch: express consignments routed through Malpensa’s FedEx hub will be handled by skeleton staff during a separate four-hour stoppage. Forwarders warn that missed connections may trigger knock-on delays at Frankfurt and Paris, where slots are tight due to EES roll-outs. The strike comes just one day after major rail works on the Roma-Fiumicino link (4–7 July) and heightens concern that Italy’s transport infrastructure will struggle to absorb record tourist flows expected this summer.
