Poland reinstates border checks with Germany and Lithuania until 5 August
Poland’s government has confirmed that uniformed Border Guard officers, backed by Military Police and Territorial Defence units, will resume systematic checks on the country’s western and north-eastern land frontiers at 06:00 on Tuesday, 7 July. The controls will cover all 65 road crossings with Germany (52) and Lithuania (13), although round-the-clock inspection lanes will operate at 18 of them (16 German, 2 Lithuanian). Mobile patrols will supplement fixed checkpoints on smaller roads and rail lines. The move follows months of complaints from Warsaw that Berlin’s own unilateral controls—introduced last year in response to irregular migration via the so-called “Belarus route”—have pushed would-be asylum-seekers back into Poland. According to the Polish Interior Ministry, German police have returned more than 1 300 migrants to Polish territory since May 2025. Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters that “symmetrical and temporary” measures are needed “so long as our neighbours keep Schengen on hold”.

From a business-mobility perspective, the greatest concern is congestion. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) will funnel traffic into single inspection lanes on key motorway corridors, leaving truckers and tourist traffic vulnerable to kilometre-long queues. Polish haulage association ZMPD warns that just two-hour delays can break legally mandated driving-time schedules and trigger contractual penalties for just-in-time deliveries. Hoteliers in border regions also fear last-minute cancellations as German leisure travellers look elsewhere for hassle-free holidays.

To take the guesswork out of these preparations, VisaHQ provides an up-to-date overview of Poland’s entry requirements and an online application portal for visas and residence permits. Their dedicated page (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) lets corporate mobility teams and individual travellers verify documentation rules, calculate processing times, and submit applications in one place, streamlining trips that might otherwise be derailed by last-minute border checks.

Although the regulation is initially valid until 5 August, officials admit it could be extended through the peak summer season. Companies with cross-border staff rotations or critical supply chains are therefore advised to build extra lead-time into transport plans, brief drivers on documentary requirements (passports or ID cards for EU nationals, visas/residence permits for third-country nationals), and monitor the Border Guard’s live-traffic feeds. Frequent business travellers should also keep proof of accommodation and meeting invitations handy, as spot checks have been announced. The episode underscores a wider trend of “Schengen à la carte” that has emerged since the 2015 migration crisis and was amplified by the hybrid pressure on Poland’s eastern border in 2025. Mobility managers may need to treat Central European land routes as quasi-external frontiers for the foreseeable future.
