Shannon Airport Reports 12 % Passenger Surge as Route Network Hits 40 Destinations
The Shannon Airport Group has announced that 1.17 million passengers travelled through the mid-west gateway between January and June 2026, a 12 % increase on the same period last year. The airport notched up its busiest day in 17 years on 28 June when 11,400 travellers used the terminal, buoyed by strong transatlantic demand and new European leisure routes. Chief Executive Ray O’Driscoll attributes the growth to “real demand, supported by new routes and more choice”. Shannon now offers 40 direct services — its widest network since 2009 — including Aer Lingus’ boosted Boston schedule (now 10 weekly flights), United’s seasonal Chicago extension and Ryanair’s summer additions to Naples, Dubrovnik and Newcastle. Longer-haul connectivity has been restored to 96 % of pre-pandemic seat capacity, according to OAG schedules. For multinationals with operations in the Shannon-Limerick tech corridor, the numbers are significant. More transatlantic frequencies reduce the need to rout travellers through the congestion-prone Dublin hub and shorten door-to-door times to US manufacturing sites. Employers should revisit travel policies that default to Dublin departures and consider Shannon for assignee family visits, especially as the airport retains US pre-clearance.

With the network widening, passengers should double-check that their travel documents are in order. VisaHQ’s Irish portal lets flyers and corporate travel managers verify visa requirements in seconds and arrange fast-track applications or passport renewals entirely online, smoothing the path for seamless departures from Shannon.

On-the-ground investment is keeping pace: Shannon’s €28 million security upgrade (3 D scanners and biometric e-gates) is now complete, allowing passengers to leave liquids and laptops in bags and cutting average queue times to six minutes at peak. A €15 million runway resurfacing project will be tendered in Q3 2026, partly financed through the government’s Regional Airports Programme. The passenger boom, however, revives the perennial question of surface access. Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s feasibility study into a direct rail spur is still in draft; until built, corporates should prepare for longer road transfer times during July-August tourist peaks. Travel managers may also need to secure advance hotel allocations as room occupancy in Limerick and Ennis exceeded 89 % in June.
