EU may postpone €20 ETIAS travel authorisation to 2027, raising uncertainty for Spain-bound visitors
Airlines and border authorities across Europe are bracing for another schedule change after the Financial Times revealed that the European Commission is considering delaying the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) until 2027.

EU may postpone €20 ETIAS travel authorisation to 2027, raising uncertainty for Spain-bound visitors

If you’re looking for practical support while the rules remain in flux, VisaHQ offers an end-to-end platform for securing Spain-related travel authorisations—including the forthcoming ETIAS—providing real-time status updates, document checklists and corporate account tools.

Euronews confirmed the report on 8 July, citing EU-LISA officials who want to “clean up” glitches in the recently deployed Entry/Exit System (EES) before adding a second layer of biometric checks. ETIAS—often dubbed “the EU’s ESTA”—was due to start in Q4 2026 and would require visa-exempt travellers from more than 60 countries, including the UK, US and Canada, to obtain a €20 electronic pass before entering Spain or any other Schengen member. The Spanish tourism sector had already begun marketing campaigns to familiarise British holiday-makers with the new formality; a 12-month slide would force operators to rewrite brochures and digital booking flows yet again. For business-travel managers, the takeaway is mixed. A postponement buys time to integrate ETIAS APIs into HR and travel-management software and to educate frequent flyers about data-privacy obligations. On the flip side, the underlying cause—technical problems with EES kiosks—continues to generate hour-long queues at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona El Prat, costing companies productivity and prompting some to reroute through Lisbon or Geneva. Spanish Border Police have processed an average of 105,000 third-country nationals per day since EES went live in April, far exceeding modelling assumptions. Industry groups ACI Europe and IATA warn that if both systems overlap in peak 2027, airports will need up to 30 % more e-gates and floor space. The Ministry of the Interior says it has already ordered 240 additional biometric booths but needs clarity from Brussels to finalise the tender. Until official confirmation arrives—expected after the 18 July Justice and Home Affairs Council—mobility teams should monitor EU-LISA press releases and maintain dual contingency plans: one for a late-2026 start with a six-month grace period, and another for a full-year deferral. Either scenario underscores the growing importance of pre-travel data compliance for Spain-related assignments.
