Dubai Customs slashes baggage-screening time to 7 seconds as 3 million passengers descend on DXB
Dubai Customs has unveiled an integrated summer-operations plan designed to keep 3 million passengers moving smoothly through Dubai International Airport (DXB) during the first half of July. At the heart of the plan is a network of 19 high-speed baggage-screening machines and 77 smart detection systems that now clear bags in as little as seven seconds—down from an average of 12 seconds last year. Officials say the upgrade comes in response to record inbound traffic linked to the school holidays and the FIFA World Cup fan-transit wave. To achieve the faster throughput, Dubai Customs partnered with Dubai Airports to re-engineer inspection halls, moving manual search tables closer to exit gates and adding dedicated channels for families, passengers with reduced mobility and travellers transiting with pets. New “pet inspection suites” equipped with veterinary facilities will open in Terminals 1, 2 and 3 before the Eid Al-Adha return rush.

Meanwhile, travellers keen to sidestep potential immigration hiccups can leverage VisaHQ’s online platform to secure UAE visas, verify document requirements and track approvals in real time—making the arrival experience at DXB as seamless as Dubai Customs’ new seven-second bag checks.

The authority has also published a multilingual traveller guide that explains duty-free allowances (Dh3,000 for personal gifts) and the rules on prescription medicines, vaping devices and drones. Khalid Ahmed, Director of Passenger Operations, said the move supports the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 goal of doubling the emirate’s foreign-trade volumes by 2033. “By cutting clearance times without compromising security we make Dubai more attractive to tourists, business travellers and multinationals that base their regional teams here,” he noted. Advanced analytics embedded in the scanners flag suspicious items in real time, while AI-driven rostering allocates officers to the busiest belts. For mobility managers, the improvements mean leaner itineraries: average kerb-to-door arrival times for corporate assignees are expected to fall below 45 minutes even during peak hours. Employers should, however, remind staff that gifts above Dh3,000 or excess electronics trigger customs duty, and that fines for undeclared cash above Dh60,000 remain steep. With passenger flows forecast to stay elevated through the 19 July World Cup final, companies are advised to book airport meet-and-greet services early and allow extra road-transfer time once outside the terminal.
