UK revokes ETA clearance for Finnish MP Päivi Räsänen, raising concerns over discretionary refusals

A late-night report on 12 July revealed that former Finnish Interior Minister and current MP Päivi Räsänen was forced to alter her itinerary home from the United States after the United Kingdom cancelled her approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) only three days before she was due to transit London. According to the Daily Finland story, Räsänen had applied for the new ETA—mandatory for visa-exempt passengers transiting or entering the UK—and initially received automatic approval. On 3 July, however, British authorities revoked the permit without explanation, citing only “information provided by the applicant.” Räsänen believes the refusal is linked to her March 2026 conviction for incitement against a minority group, although her appeal is still pending. Her husband, who applied simultaneously, was approved. Because the change came after her flights were booked, the MP had to re-route via another European hub, incurring additional cost and delay. The incident exposes a little-publicised feature of the UK system: unlike a visa refusal, an ETA cancellation carries no mandatory explanation or right of review, and carriers may not board a traveller whose ETA is withdrawn. For Finnish business travellers and corporate mobility managers, the case is a timely reminder that ETAs (and comparable systems such as the forthcoming EU ETIAS) can be refused retroactively and at short notice. Companies should monitor employees’ authorisation status up to departure and ensure tickets are flexible. High-profile or politically exposed persons (PEPs) may face enhanced screening—even for airport transit—so contingency routings should be in place. Finnish travel‐industry associations are expected to seek clarification from the UK Home Office and to request that discretionary refusals be accompanied by a clearer appeals mechanism. In the meantime, travellers are advised to submit ETA applications well in advance and to check their status before entering the 72-hour airline API window.
