Brenner Rail Corridor to Shut 18 July–1 August for Maintenance; Replacement Buses Scheduled
Cross-border rail traffic between Italy and Austria will face a two-week interruption this summer. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) and ÖBB-Infrastruktur announced today that the Brenner railway line will be closed in phases from Saturday 18 July until Saturday 1 August 2026 to allow heavy maintenance and capacity-upgrade works. The shutdown affects one of Europe’s busiest freight and passenger corridors linking Verona, Bolzano/Bozen and Innsbruck. On 18 July the entire Bolzano–Brennero section will be out of service; from 19 July the closure will be limited to Bressanone/Brixen–Brennero. During the same window, works on the Austrian side and on the Veneto network (Peri–Domegliara) will further compound disruption. Regional services will be replaced by buses stopping at all intermediate stations, while direct coaches will connect Bressanone and Fortezza. Long-distance trains are also hit. Trenitalia has already cancelled Frecciarossa pairs Milano-Bolzano and Pescara-Bolzano for the week of 20–26 July, while several Intercity and overnight services from Naples, Rome and Lecce will terminate at Verona Porta Nuova. Deutsche Bahn/ÖBB EuroCity services south of Innsbruck are similarly suspended. Tickets remain valid on substitute buses, but seat reservations are void; passengers are advised to check revised timetables 24 hours before departure. For logistics operators, the closure coincides with the peak summer export season for northern Italian manufacturing. Freight forwarders are rerouting via Tarvisio (Villach) and the Reschen Pass road corridor, but both alternatives add time and cost. Companies should expect tighter capacity and earlier booking cut-offs for intermodal slots. The works are part of a €160 million programme to prepare the corridor for the 64 km Brenner Base Tunnel, now forecast to open in 2032. Travel risk tip: allow at least 60 extra minutes for airport transfers to Munich, Innsbruck or Verona during the closure. Tour operators bringing alpine tourists to the Dolomites are switching to charter coaches and advising clients of luggage limits on buses.
