Austria’s Digitalisation Ministry has dispatched a mobile service team that will stop at more than 100 locations this summer to help citizens activate “ID-Austria”, the country’s e-identification app that integrates driving licence, passport and national health card. The tour, which called at the Krems “Alles Marille” festival on Tuesday, is designed to close adoption gaps among older residents ahead of new EU wallet-interoperability rules due in 2027. For globally mobile employees the initiative is more than a consumer convenience. An active ID-Austria already enables contact-free renewals of residence permits, online signature of tenancy agreements and remote registration of vehicles—tasks that often plague expatriates during the ‘settling-in’ phase. Future releases will add digital visa endorsements, allowing airlines and border police to scan a QR-code instead of paper stickers. Companies with large commuter populations from neighbouring Slovakia and Hungary are watching closely; cross-border workers who obtain secondary residence status in Austria will soon need an ID-Austria to access e-government portals. The service bus issues credentials on the spot, provided applicants bring a photo ID. No appointment is necessary. Authorities report 1.2 million active IDs in Lower Austria alone but say many existing Handy-Signatur users have not completed a two-factor upgrade. The roadshow runs until the end of August and publishes daily stops on Digitalaustria.gv.at.
