Eight in ten Prague residents back tighter Airbnb rules, poll shows
A flash poll published by Expats.cz on 19 July 2026 reveals that 83 percent of readers support giving Czech municipalities greater powers to regulate short-term rentals such as Airbnb. The survey follows Prague 1’s call for nationwide legislation that would let cities cap the number of nights an apartment can be let to tourists and require hosts to share guest data directly with local authorities. For corporate mobility teams, the result is significant: serviced-apartment and Airbnb-style accommodation has long bridged the gap between hotel stays and long-term leases for project staff. Should tighter limits pass, companies could face higher costs and reduced inventory during peak relocation periods, particularly in Prague’s historic core where up to 15 percent of housing stock is estimated to be listed on short-term platforms. Lawmakers are expected to debate amendments to the Act on Tourism Services after the summer recess. Proposed measures include mandatory registration numbers, fines of up to CZK 500,000 for unlicensed rentals, and real-time data-sharing with the Financial Administration. HR departments should start mapping alternative housing—such as corporate-lease apartments in outer districts—and consider longer fixed leases for assignees staying beyond 30 days. They should also monitor the bill’s progress: if passed this autumn, new rules could take effect as early as January 2027.
