Gardaí activate traffic lockdown around Slane Castle as Luke Combs double-header draws 160,000 fans
An Garda Síochána has rolled out one of its largest concert-era policing operations to date ahead of country music star Luke Combs’ back-to-back shows at Slane Castle on 18–19 July 2026. The official Traffic Management Plan, published on the Garda website, confirms a complete closure of all roads into Slane village from 12:30 pm each day, with diversions remaining until around 02:00 am the following morning. More than 1,200 Garda officers, traffic stewards and private marshals are on site to direct an expected 160,000 concert-goers, most of whom will arrive by charter coach. Priority lanes have been created for Bus Éireann, Marathon Coaches and other licensed operators, while private cars are funnelled into colour-coded car parks on the Navan, Drogheda, Collon and Dublin roads. Any vehicle parked on verges faces immediate towing, and no taxis or buses are permitted to use the Kells Road (R163). The shutdown ripples well beyond County Meath. Logistics firms with time-critical deliveries to Drogheda port, Meath industrial parks or north-south supply chains are being advised to reroute via the M1 or N52. Employers with expatriate staff based in Kells, Navan or Drogheda report travel-to-work times increasing by up to 90 minutes during similar Slane events. For mobility managers, the Garda plan offers clear guidance: use official transport, build in long buffers for airport connections, and communicate with assignees about temporary access restrictions to residential estates inside the cordon. International visitors should note that Slane lies outside the Dublin Short-Hop commuter zone; Leap travel cards will not be accepted on most shuttle buses. The Slane operation is also a rehearsal for Ireland’s forthcoming EU Council Presidency events this autumn, where similar rural venues and rolling road closures may be deployed for security reasons. Companies should therefore integrate Garda traffic bulletins into their duty-of-care monitoring systems.
