UAE condemns Houthi threat to blockade Saudi ports, stresses freedom of navigation
At 02:21 a.m. on 22 July 2026 the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement—carried by Abu Dhabi’s Aletihad News Centre—"strongly condemning" Houthi declarations that they may impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia. Citing UN Security Council Resolution 2722 on Red Sea navigation, Abu Dhabi affirmed that freedom of passage through international waterways is a non-negotiable principle under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Although the warning targeted Saudi ports, any blockade in the Red Sea would reverberate through UAE supply chains that rely on Jeddah and Yanbu for feeder services and truck corridors into western Saudi markets. Logistics firms have already diversified routings via Oman’s Sohar port since similar threats surfaced in May. From a mobility perspective, corporate security teams should monitor Lloyd’s List casualty reports and BIMCO advisories for Red Sea transits. Companies moving project cargo or employee household goods between Jebel Ali and Saudi Arabia may need to re-schedule sailings or shift to overland routes via the Ghuwaifat border crossing if shipping insurers raise premiums or retract coverage. The UAE reiterated its solidarity with Riyadh and called on the international community to enforce existing sanctions on entities that threaten commercial navigation—a reminder that geopolitical flashpoints can quickly translate into travel-risk considerations for multinational staff movements.
