Early-morning Suomi.fi maintenance on 22 July briefly takes down Finland’s digital identity services

Finland’s Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) carried out scheduled maintenance on the Suomi.fi Messages platform in the small hours of Wednesday, 22 July 2026. From 03:00 to 06:00 local time, all inbound and outbound traffic on the Suomi.fi ecosystem—including e-Identification, secure messaging and e-Authorisations—was unavailable. Although the three-hour window was planned for a period of historically low traffic, the outage still affected night-shift workers, international students filing late-hour residence-permit extensions, and logistics operators that rely on real-time Customs authorisations. DVV said the upgrade replaced expiring server certificates and installed patches that prepare the back-end for the EU’s forthcoming Digital Identity Wallet harmonisation tests scheduled for autumn 2026. The agency published step-by-step contingency guidance a week in advance, advising companies to postpone time-critical submissions or to use paper-based fallback channels. Large employers such as Kone and Nokia activated internal hotlines to support foreign employees who needed access to Kela or Migri services before dawn flights. Helsinki’s Vantaa Airport also pre-briefed ground-handling agents, reminding them that airlines must accept printed residence-permit cards when the QR-code validation interface is offline. In practice, disruptions were limited. DVV’s post-event report logged fewer than 600 failed authentication attempts and no data-loss incidents. Still, the episode underscores how deeply digital public services are interwoven with Finland’s mobility infrastructure: residence-permit renewals, tax numbers for posted workers, and Customs declarations for ATA carnets all ride on the same identity backbone. Multinationals are therefore encouraged to map critical processes and add buffer time whenever Suomi.fi announces maintenance. Looking ahead, DVV confirmed that larger, two-phase upgrades will be required later this year as Finland aligns its national stack with the EU’s eIDAS 2.0 regulation. Those interventions are expected to take place outside core business hours, but global mobility managers should monitor DVV bulletins closely and alert travellers whose immigration status depends on real-time e-services.
