Ticket holders will have to present photo ID matching the name printed on their personalised QR-code ticket; walk-through metal detectors and random bag swabs for explosives are also being introduced. A novelty for 2026 is the deployment of the Salzburg police force’s new counter-drone unit. Portable radio-frequency jammers and net-guns capable of disabling unauthorised drones will be on standby throughout the six-week festival. Organisers say the measure is necessary because high-profile galas attended by heads of state and Fortune-500 sponsors are considered potential espionage and protest targets. Austria’s Civil Aviation Authority fast-tracked a temporary restricted airspace (TRA) over the Old Town between 25 July and 31 August. Corporate hospitality providers are being advised to factor in at least 30 minutes extra for security queues and to ensure VIP guests carry passports or EU national ID cards. Festival hotels report a surge in concierge requests for ‘fast-track’ accreditation; however, police stress that no exemptions will be granted, citing equal-treatment rules. For global mobility teams the tightened regime is a reminder that Austria’s event organisers are increasingly aligning with international best practice after a string of protest disruptions across Europe. The same verification software used at Salzburg is already standard at Davos and Cannes, meaning multinational firms can integrate guest data upload into existing compliance workflows. From a legal perspective the festival’s decision fits within Austria’s new Major Events Security Ordinance, which entered into force on 1 July. The regulation allows organisers of gatherings exceeding 5 000 international visitors to request on-site police support and to perform mandatory ID matching—even though Austria has no domestic ‘show-your-papers’ culture. Lawyers note that failure to screen could void event-cancellation insurance, a clause now quietly inserted by insurers after the 2023 Just Stop Oil protests at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
