Justice Minister Costas Fitiris on 24 July chaired an inter-agency meeting aimed at bolstering policing and community safety in parts of Cyprus that have seen rapid increases in migrant populations. Senior officers from the Cyprus Police and experts from the Institute for Demographic & Migration Policy reviewed crime-prevention data and discussed reallocating patrols to neighbourhoods around migrant reception centres and crowded urban dormitories. While Cyprus’ overall crime rate remains low by EU standards, petty theft and interpersonal violence in overstretched districts such as central Nicosia and Larnaca have inched up. Officials blamed overcrowded housing, limited job access for asylum seekers and a surge in informal economies. The minister called for “balanced measures that protect residents without stigmatising newcomers,” echoing Brussels’ guidance that security and inclusion must go hand-in-hand. The task-force will pilot mixed patrols combining police, social workers and intercultural mediators, taking cues from models used in Malta and Greece. A second strand is data-sharing: immigration services will supply anonymised arrival statistics so police can forecast demand for language interpreters and victim-support staff. For employers running expatriate programmes, the initiative means faster police clearances for residence permits—Fitiris pledged to slash waiting times by 40 % by digitising background-check requests. Relocation managers should brief assignees that ID checks near the UN-patrolled Green Line may become more frequent but are standard procedure. The working group’s recommendations will feed into Cyprus’ 2027–2030 National Migration Strategy, due to be tabled in Parliament this autumn. Businesses operating in affected districts may be invited to corporate-social-responsibility schemes aimed at easing integration through language courses and job fairs.
