Italian G7 security triggers temporary Schengen controls affecting Spain-bound travellers

Italy has formally re-introduced controls at its internal Schengen borders from 24 to 26 July 2026 as part of a wider security plan for events linked to the G7 and to the Festival dell’Alta Felicità in the Susa Valley. All travellers arriving by land, sea or air from neighbouring Schengen countries—including those coming from or transiting through Spain—should be prepared for identity checks and possible vehicle inspections. Although the measure is limited to 72 hours, it breaks the normally passport-free travel regime between Italy and its Schengen partners. Business travellers with tight itineraries—especially those routing through Milan-Malpensa, Turin or overland through the French–Italian and Franco-Spanish corridors—should allow extra time at crossing points and carry proof of accommodation and onward tickets. Airlines have warned that flights marketed as “Schengen” may board through non-Schengen gates during the control window, requiring passport presentation. For Spanish companies operating in northern Italy, the timing coincides with the peak summer hand-over period for expatriate assignments; HR teams are advising staff to keep residence cards and assignment letters on hand in case officials require evidence of legal status in the EU. Logistics operators shipping high-value goods across the Pyrenees–Alps corridor also face potential delays and should review contractual delivery guarantees. Under Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code, Member States may re-impose internal controls only as a last resort and must notify the European Commission. The Commission has published Italy’s notification, which cites foreseeable threats to public order and specifically names the Spanish frontier among those where checks may occur. While the measure expires after 26 July, officials have not ruled out similar steps ahead of the Jubilee or Olympic preparations later in the year. Practical tip: Travellers driving from Barcelona or Girona towards Italy via France will likely encounter French checks as well, because France already maintains its own G7-related controls until 31 October. Carry a physical passport or EU national ID, even if you usually rely on digital documents.
