UK updates Spain travel advice; highlights route checks through France and Gibraltar
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) refreshed its Spain travel guidance on 22 July and confirmed the advice remains ‘current at 24 July 2026’. The update removes wildfire warnings for Almería but stresses that anyone driving to Spain via France or entering through Gibraltar should also consult those jurisdictions’ advisories because of evolving border procedures. Although directed at UK nationals, the notice is a bell-wether for multinational employers with large British mobile talent pools. In practical terms, the FCDO reiterates that holders of non-EU passports must ensure their Schengen validity remains above 90/180-day limits and that Spanish police may request onward-travel proof at land crossings, not just at airports. Mobility managers arranging graduate rotations starting in September should note that the post-Brexit ‘entitlement-to-travel’ certificates issued by HMPO are no longer accepted by Spanish carriers; original passports are mandatory. The guidance also reminds dual nationals that they must leave Spain on the same passport they used to enter—a point occasionally overlooked when employees renew documents mid-assignment. Finally, the FCDO flags possible protest-related roadblocks in Catalonia and the Basque Country during the summer festival season. Organisations running ground transport programmes need to keep contingency routing and driver contact protocols up to date.
