Italy has temporarily re-introduced border controls at its land frontier with France from 00:00 on 24 July until 23:59 on 26 July 2026. The Interior Ministry informed the European Commission that the measure is needed to prevent possible violent actions by radical anti–TAV activists expected to converge on the “Festival dell’Alta Felicità” in Venaus (Susa Valley, Piedmont), a few kilometres from the Fréjus and Montgenèvre crossings. The notification, published on the EU “Temporary Reintroduction of Border Control” portal, invokes Article 25a of the Schengen Borders Code, which allows checks for foreseeable threats to public order. During the 72-hour window Italian police will be authorised to stop travellers on inbound and outbound roads and mountain paths, verify identity documents and search vehicles. Commercial operators have been told to factor extra time—around 20-40 minutes per vehicle—into cross-border freight timetables, while long-distance coach companies serving Milan–Lyon and Turin–Grenoble routes have issued customer advisories. Although Schengen rules normally guarantee free movement, several member states have layered ad-hoc controls onto existing long-term checks introduced in 2025 for terrorism and migration concerns. Italy itself already maintains controls on the Slovenian border; however, the French frontier has remained mostly open since the 2006 Winter Olympics. This is therefore the first targeted re-closure of that segment in a decade and underlines Rome’s security focus on the Alpine high-speed-rail protest movement. Business implications are modest but real. Turinese manufacturing clusters that rely on just-in-time deliveries from suppliers in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes could experience minor delays; tour operators bringing French visitors to Ligurian and Tuscan resorts may need to rearrange pick-up schedules; and corporate travellers are advised to carry passports rather than rely on national-ID cards to speed inspection. In practical terms companies should alert mobile employees, add 30-minute buffers to itineraries between 24–26 July, and remind foreign assignees that Schengen day-counting for non-EU nationals is not affected—time spent under internal-border control still counts as Schengen days. Provided no incidents occur, controls are expected to be lifted at midnight on 27 July.
