German Foreign Office issues updated Guatemala travel advisory after 7.4-magnitude quake
The German Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) updated its travel and safety advice for Guatemala on 26 July 2026 in the wake of Friday night’s 7.4-magnitude earthquake off Mexico’s Chiapas coast, near the Guatemalan border. The bulletin warns of aftershocks, possible landslides on the Pan-American Highway and temporary closures of La Aurora International Airport. Travellers are urged to register on the "Elefand" crisis-preparation list and monitor local media. Although Guatemala has reopened most airports, Germany’s diplomatic mission cautions that immigration counters may process passengers more slowly while structural inspections continue. Cargo operators report that customs facilities at Puerto Quetzal and Puerto Barrios are operating at reduced capacity, potentially delaying time-sensitive shipments routed via Miami–Guatemala City–Frankfurt supply chains. The advisory reiterates pre-existing security concerns around violent crime and road blockades by protest groups. Business travellers are encouraged to arrange meet-and-greet services at the airport, avoid night driving outside the capital and carry photocopies of passports to reduce the risk of theft. For multinational companies relocating staff, the update serves as a reminder to verify business-continuity plans with local partners and ensure that emergency provisions—including satellite telephones and alternative evacuation routes via El Salvador—are in place. Insurers have begun re-pricing political-risk and kidnap-and-ransom coverage for the Guatemalan market; mobility managers should check whether higher premiums could affect assignment costs or travel budgets.
