Vienna International Airport handled 3.17 million passengers in August 2026, a 6.9 % year-on-year decline, operator Flughafen Wien AG revealed in a press release issued on 15 September. Across the wider group—including Malta and Košice airports—traffic fell a more modest 1.7 % to 4.53 million travellers. Management attributes the slump primarily to capacity cuts by major low-cost carriers and ongoing flight reductions on Middle-East routes following regional instability. Western-European traffic was down 3.2 %, while Eastern-European routes suffered a sharper 19 % contraction. On the upside, Far-East services continued to rebound, climbing 8.3 %, and cargo volumes at Vienna rose 8.3 % to 27,513 tonnes, reflecting resilient demand for e-commerce and pharmaceutical shipments. The results mark the first negative month of the year for Vienna after a buoyant summer that still saw over 6.3 million passengers in July–August and 35 days above the 100,000-passenger threshold. Year-to-date figures show Vienna Airport down 4 % versus 2025, whereas the group as a whole remains 1.1 % up thanks to double-digit growth in Malta and Košice. For corporate travel managers the figures signal tighter seat availability—especially on intra-Europe point-to-point links—through the upcoming winter timetable. Airlines have already announced frequency adjustments, and airport authorities advise passengers to arrive earlier as the first post-pandemic peak-season under the EU Entry/Exit System continues to produce longer document checks at selected gates. Despite the dip, Flughafen Wien AG reiterated its full-year guidance, projecting group traffic of 41.5 million passengers and highlighting cost discipline that lifted first-half earnings by 7 %. Investors will be watching September data closely to gauge whether August was an outlier or the start of a softer trend.
