After more than a century in service the 186-kilometre hop between Graz and Vienna is set to disappear from Austrian skies. In a statement issued on 3 August the flag-carrier Austrian Airlines (AUA) confirmed that “adjustments” to its winter timetable will include the Vienna–Graz rotation, with full details to be announced at Tuesday’s half-year results press conference. The cut is more than symbolic. The early-morning OS 117/118 pairing has long functioned as a feeder for international connections out of Vienna International Airport, allowing business travellers to reach hubs such as London, Berlin and New York before 10 a.m. Regional employers—including automotive supplier Magna and logistics giant KNAPP—told local media they rely on the 06:00 departure to keep same-day meetings feasible and avoid overnight hotel costs. Graz Airport, whose management learned of the plan only hours before the announcement, described the route as a “key location factor”. According to airport figures, the sector carried around 180,000 passengers in 2025—small in absolute terms but representing roughly 12 percent of the airport’s throughput. The cancellation comes on top of Eurowings’ decision in June to pull its based A-319 and exit two other routes, raising concerns about the viability of Austria’s second-tier regional airports. From the airline’s perspective the economics are stark: a jet burns almost as much fuel climbing as it does cruising, making ultra-short sectors costly and environmentally controversial. AUA CEO Annette Mann had signalled in May that “low-distance flights must justify their footprint,” although she also called Graz–Vienna a “strategic question”. Industry analysts note that Lufthansa Group appears to be funnelling traffic through Frankfurt and Munich, where feeder demand is stronger and aircraft utilisation higher. Corporate mobility managers should prepare travellers to reroute via rail or via Lufthansa hubs. The fastest Railjet services take 2 h 38 m door-to-door between Graz main station and Vienna Airport but do not meet early-morning long-haul banks. Travel policies may therefore need to allow overnight stays or alternative points of departure. Companies are also advised to monitor AUA’s press event on 4 August for rebooking options and potential intermodal ticketing solutions with ÖBB.
