Austrian Airlines (OS) confirmed on 3 August that it will discontinue its Vienna–Graz (VIE-GRZ) shuttle at the end of the summer season, ending more than 40 years of feeder operations between Styria’s capital and the Star Alliance carrier’s Vienna hub. According to regional daily Kleine Zeitung, the last rotation (OS 117/118) is scheduled for 26 October 2026, after which travelers will be directed to ÖBB Railjet services that already link Graz Hauptbahnhof with Vienna International Airport in 2 hours 50 minutes. Austrian said the 146-kilometre sector had become increasingly unviable as business demand failed to return to pre-pandemic levels and corporate clients embraced rail. Load factors on the eight-weekly service averaged just 48 percent in the first half of 2026, well below the network average of 78 percent, while high airport charges at the regional gateway further eroded yields. The airline added that its new Airbus A320neo sub-fleet is optimized for longer European sectors and ill-suited to ultra-short hops. The withdrawal leaves Graz with only two year-round network connections—Lufthansa to Frankfurt and Munich—heightening concerns among exporters and tech firms that rely on same-day connectivity to long-haul markets. The Styrian Chamber of Commerce warned that the loss of early-morning “banker’s flights” to Vienna will add at least three hours to typical trans-Atlantic itineraries and could influence future site-selection decisions. Regional politicians have already called on the federal government to accelerate electrification of the Southern Rail Corridor so that airport check-in luggage can be accepted at Graz station, mirroring the City Airport Train model in Vienna. From a sustainability perspective, the move is in line with the Austrian government’s 2024 Aviation Climate Roadmap, which mandates airlines to phase out domestic routes that can be covered by rail in under three hours. Environmental NGO VCÖ hailed the decision, estimating that scrapping the shuttle will eliminate around 3,600 tonnes of CO₂ annually—equivalent to the emissions of 1,500 passenger cars. For mobility managers, the key takeaway is that employee travel between Graz and intercontinental destinations will increasingly default to rail-and-air combinations routed via Vienna or alternative hubs such as Frankfurt, Zurich or Amsterdam. Companies should review corporate booking tools to ensure through-ticketing is enabled on Rail & Fly fares and consider negotiated ÖBB rate caps to control cost volatility during the transition period.
