Frankfurt’s public-health office has confirmed two additional cases of malaria tropica in the district of Schwanheim, bringing the total cluster linked to Germany’s largest airport to eight infections—six among airport workers and now two among nearby residents. The latest cases, published by the Frankfurter Rundschau on 15 September, involve individuals with neither recent travel history nor employment at Frankfurt Airport. Health officials believe the patients were bitten locally by Anopheles mosquitoes carrying Plasmodium falciparum that had arrived on intercontinental flights—an event known as “airport malaria.” Earlier this summer two ground-handling employees died after delayed diagnoses, prompting the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) to issue a nationwide physician alert. The new infections broaden the risk profile from air-side personnel to the residential communities under the flight path. The public-health office has stepped up mosquito surveillance and is considering insecticide fogging in drainage basins around Terminal 1. Employers at the airport have been asked to review vector-control measures, including window screens in rest areas and repellent availability for night-shift staff. For business travellers and expatriate families relocating to the Frankfurt area, the development is a reminder to include vector-borne-disease clauses in duty-of-care programmes. Companies should brief travelling employees on symptoms such as cyclical fever and advise seeking immediate medical attention if illness occurs within four weeks of a flight connection through Frankfurt. The RKI stresses that malaria remains non-endemic in Germany and that early treatment is highly effective. Nevertheless, HR and travel-risk managers should monitor updates, as federal authorities may introduce pre-arrival disinsection checks for aircraft from high-incidence regions if the cluster expands.
