Hong Kong logs 36.67 million visitor arrivals in first eight months of 2026
Hong Kong’s tourism rebound continued to gather pace over the summer, with the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) reporting 36.67 million visitor arrivals between January and August. Provisional data released on Tuesday show that 5.46 million travellers entered the city in August alone—up 6 percent year-on-year and the highest monthly tally since borders fully reopened in early 2023. The strong August performance was driven by a packed calendar of international MICE events and mega-spectacles such as the Worldwide Chinese Life Insurance Congress, the Hong Kong Football Festival and the TMElive International Music Awards. Mainland Chinese visitors remained the bedrock of the market, but the HKTB noted particularly robust growth from long-haul source regions, which jumped 18 percent to almost 290,000. Short-haul arrivals, however, slipped 4 percent as regional airlines continue to struggle with aircraft availability, high fuel surcharges and stiff competition from rival hubs such as Seoul and Singapore. The latest numbers suggest Hong Kong is on track to exceed the government’s full-year target of 50 million arrivals, a milestone viewed by the retail and hospitality sectors as essential for consolidating post-pandemic recovery. Hotel occupancy in core districts averaged 85 percent in August, while average daily rates climbed 11 percent year-on-year, according to industry estimates. For corporates, the rebound is translating into tighter room inventory during peak convention weeks and a gradual firming of airfares on trunk routes. Travel managers are being advised to book accommodation and meeting space further in advance and to revisit per-diem budgets for staff travelling to the SAR in Q4. Looking ahead, the HKTB said it will double down on marketing around upcoming festivals—Mid-Autumn, Halloween and Christmas—and expand flagship events such as the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival and the WinterFest countdown. The agency’s strategy is to attract “high-value-added overnight visitors”, including business delegates who extend their stays for leisure, thereby maximising economic impact beyond sheer arrival numbers.
