José Ignacio Landaluce, mayor of the port city of Algeciras, has publicly requested an explanation from Spain’s central government after local residents spotted several unmarked buses entering the city’s Centro de Internamiento de Extranjeros (CIE) in recent days. Speaking on 19 September, Landaluce said the lack of information is “generating needless anxiety in a community that lives first-hand the consequences of migration policy”. The mayor insists the request is not meant to interfere with state competences over immigration enforcement but to obtain clarity on where the transferred migrants are coming from and what onward arrangements are planned. The Interior Ministry has so far declined to comment, although officials privately admit the CIE is being used to ease overcrowding in Ceuta. Algeciras’ port is a critical node for Spain’s automotive and perishables supply chains; past protests outside the CIE have caused traffic snarls on access roads. Landaluce warned that surprise arrivals risk rekindling demonstrations by dockworkers and truckers worried about security and reputational impact. Corporate mobility teams with employees transiting through Algeciras are advised to monitor local news for potential roadblocks and to allow extra time for crossing the port area over the coming week.
