Poland Clarifies Rules for Ukrainians Who Lost Temporary-Protection (UKR) Status After 1 September
The Polish Border Guard has issued a high-profile notice reminding Ukrainian nationals that those who failed to verify their identity documents by 31 August automatically lost their temporary-protection “UKR” status on 1 September 2026. Affected individuals have been re-categorised as “NUE” (non-verified), which removes access to labour-market privileges, social benefits and the right to visa-free intra-Schengen travel. To regain protection, Ukrainians must present a valid biometric passport at a designated Border Guard post, submit updated personal data and re-apply for a PESEL number. The agency emphasises that workplace inspections will intensify from October, and employers could face fines up to PLN 30,000 for hiring persons without valid status. Students and researchers whose status lapsed risk losing university enrolment unless they regularise their stay within 30 days. The clarification follows anecdotal reports of Ukrainians being denied boarding on domestic flights or facing problems at bank branches when PESEL numbers were de-activated. NGOs warn the new rules may push some displaced persons into irregular employment. Corporate mobility teams managing Ukrainian assignees in Poland should audit staff documentation, schedule verification appointments and budget for potential gaps in social-security coverage. Failure to act may expose companies to administrative sanctions and disrupt project timelines.
