A military court in Nicosia sentenced three Sudanese nationals to 30 days' imprisonment on 21 September for entering the Turkish-controlled north of the island via a first-degree military restricted zone. The incident highlights the legal minefield created by the island’s division: while the EU acquis is suspended north of the Green Line, migrants often use the porous buffer zone to seek work or onward passage, exposing themselves to prosecution on both sides. For businesses moving staff between the Republic and the north—for example, for construction projects in the UN buffer-zone area—the case underscores the importance of using designated crossing points only. EU auditors recently warned that companies employing third-country nationals in the south could face reputational damage if subcontractors are indirectly encouraging Green-Line crossings by offering informal work. Practical advice: ensure that any employee—local or expatriate—who needs to visit the TRNC for legitimate business purposes carries both a Republic of Cyprus ID/passport and any required company invitation letter, and crosses only at the nine authorised checkpoints.
