Finland’s Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) issued a NOTAM effective 05:00–13:00 local time on 22 September restricting instrument approaches and departures at the Helsinki University Hospital/Meilahti (EFHY) heliport. A 165-foot mobile crane positioned less than 250 metres from the heliport’s reference point creates an obstacle that renders the RNP 260 approach and RNP 213 departure procedures temporarily unavailable. The heliport sits just three kilometres from the capital’s central business district and is frequently used by air-ambulance, corporate shuttle and state flights. Operators have been advised to file alternative landing sites—such as Hernesaari or Helsinki-Malmi—and to secure ground-handling in advance amid tight urban airspace. Although the restriction lasts only eight hours, medical-evacuation planners and executive-flight departments were scrambling overnight to update flight plans and passenger briefings. The incident underscores the complexity of operating rotary-wing services in Helsinki’s dense construction environment, where short-notice cranes and drone activity routinely trigger temporary air-risk mitigations. Companies relying on point-to-point helicopter transfers for site visits or medevac coverage should monitor NOTAM feeds and maintain contingency landing options within the city.
