Finland’s Defence Forces imposed an immediate flight ban and maritime exclusion zone covering a stretch of the Gulf of Finland between Kotka and Hamina during the early hours of 28 July. The temporary measure – the third such closure in less than a month – was triggered by intelligence that military-grade drones launched at Russian targets could veer off course and enter Finnish territory. Helsinki’s decision comes after a series of incidents in which Ukrainian long-range drones, reportedly jammed by Russian electronic-warfare systems, strayed into the airspace of Finland, Estonia and Latvia. Officials stressed that no infringement had yet been recorded, but argued the pre-emptive restrictions allow the Air Force to scramble fighters and employ counter-drone measures without endangering civil aviation or shipping. Commercial carriers were re-routed via Swedish and Baltic corridors, while cargo vessels approaching the ports of Kotka and Hamina were instructed to slow steam outside the exclusion zone. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) estimated that the four-hour closure delayed 37 passenger flights and diverted two container ships, creating knock-on effects across Scandinavian schedules. Geopolitically, the move underscores how the war in Ukraine is spilling over into NATO’s northern flank just four months after Finland joined the Alliance. Defence analysts note that repeated closures could undermine Helsinki’s efforts to market itself as a safe Nordic gateway for Asian and North American traffic – a cornerstone of Finnair’s hub strategy – and may prompt multinational companies to review contingency plans for staff movements and supply-chain routings through southern Finland.
