The EUROPOL-supported operation led to six arrests, ten property searches and the seizure of counterfeit passports, biometric residence cards, cash and crypto wallets. Investigators say the ring exploited legal short-stay visas to move clients from Asia and the Middle East into the EU, then provided high-quality forgeries so they could board internal flights to hub airports such as Madrid-Barajas or Milan-Malpensa before heading to the UK on domestic legs that bypass exit controls. Each journey cost up to €12,000, with profits laundered through shell companies registered in Spain and the Veneto region of Italy. EUROPOL’s new European Centre Against Migrant Smuggling (ECAMS), launched in March, provided live analytical support and crypto-tracing. Spain’s involvement underscores Madrid’s strategy of pairing its 2026 Extraordinary Regularisation programme with tougher enforcement against networks that undermine legal pathways. The case also showcases how the fully-deployed Entry/Exit System is beginning to yield actionable data: mismatches between biometric scans and passport numbers first tipped off Austrian authorities last month. Why it matters for mobility managers: forged document routes often overlap with legitimate corporate travel itineraries, increasing scrutiny at secondary checks. Companies whose employees routinely connect through high-risk hubs should budget extra transit time and ensure staff carry supporting documents—especially when travelling on temporary assignment visas.
