Ultra-low-cost carrier Wizz Air operated its inaugural Larnaca-to-Madrid flight on 25 September, adding a second direct Spain route from Cyprus after Barcelona. The thrice-weekly service widens options for business travellers and supports growing trade links between the two EU members. Hermes Airports celebrated the departure with a gate-side ceremony; its Aviation Development Director Maria Kouroupi said the route “furthers our joint goal of year-round, cost-effective connectivity for Cypriot residents and visitors.” Spanish investment in Cyprus — notably in renewable energy and hospitality — has risen 22 % since 2024, and the new flight is expected to facilitate executive travel and cargo in both directions. In the opposite direction, Cypriot exporters of halloumi and tech services gain faster access to Madrid’s distribution hubs. Wizz Air Network Director Andras Szabo noted that the airline has stationed a fifth aircraft at its Larnaca base this summer, enabling frequency increases on Athens, Milan and London routes. Corporations should revisit travel-policy fare ceilings, as introductory one-way fares for Madrid start at €39 but rise sharply close to departure. Travel-risk managers should remind staff that while both countries are EU members, Cyprus is not yet in Schengen; passengers on the new route must still clear passport control on arrival until accession is finalised, expected late 2026 or early 2027.
