At 10:03 on 28 September 2026 an Airbus A320neo christened “Iseltwald” pushed back from gate B 39 at Zurich Airport bound for Thessaloniki, Greece, with a dome-shaped Starlink antenna gleaming on its crown. The launch makes SWISS the first European network carrier to provide SpaceX’s satellite broadband from gate-to-gate. While many airlines still rely on geostationary satellites that struggle over Europe’s crowded skies, Starlink’s low-earth-orbit constellation delivers fibre-like speeds and latency below 30 ms. Business travellers can now upload large presentations, join cloud-based collaboration suites or sync CRM databases during the 2-hour sector to Greece—tasks that previously had to wait until the hotel Wi-Fi. Connectivity is free of charge across all cabins for passengers who log in with a Miles & More or Lufthansa Travel ID profile, a strategic move designed to deepen customer loyalty within the Lufthansa Group. Three additional A320-family aircraft will be retrofitted by year-end, and the entire 90-strong SWISS fleet—from the short-haul Embraer E2 to the intercontinental A350-900—is scheduled to have the hardware installed by 2029. SWISS managers say the project complements the carrier’s post-pandemic “premium leisure + business” strategy. “Travellers want their digital life to continue seamlessly at 11,000 metres,” Chief Commercial Officer Tamur Goudarzi Pour noted during the onboard press call. The airline has issued guidelines banning voice and video calls and live-streaming to preserve cabin ambience, but otherwise places few restrictions on usage.
