Oman Clarifies E-Visa Versus Visa-on-Arrival Rules—German Travellers Get 14-Day Waiver
In a 5 October 2026 update to its consular guidance, the German Foreign Office details new information received from Muscat regarding tourist and short business visits. While the Royal Oman Police officially requires foreigners to apply for an e-visa in advance, the Omani Foreign Ministry now confirms that German nationals may still obtain a free visa on arrival for stays up to 14 days, provided they can show a hotel booking, onward ticket and proof of funds. Stays of 15–30 days attract a fee payable at the airport, and trips exceeding 30 days must be pre-cleared online. Crucially, visas issued on arrival are single-entry only; business travellers driving to the UAE for meetings will need a fresh Omani visa to re-enter. Overstays incur fines of 10 OMR per day, and the immigration system automatically blocks future applications until penalties are settled. For corporate mobility teams, the clarification simplifies last-minute assignments: technicians can still fly in with supporting documents rather than waiting the usual three working days for an e-visa approval. However, risk managers should warn employees that airline staff occasionally deny boarding to holders of temporary or emergency passports. Travel-management companies recommend uploading the e-visa receipt (where applicable) to the traveller’s profile in the firm’s booking tool and carrying printed copies, as airport Wi-Fi can be patchy. Alcohol import limits (two litres) and strict controls on prescription drugs remain unchanged; violation can lead to detention. The update underscores the importance of checking entry rules shortly before departure, as Oman has adjusted its visa policies five times since 2024 in response to fluctuating tourism demand.
