France notifies next six-month extension of internal Schengen border checks
An update to the European Commission’s public register shows that Paris has filed back-to-back notifications extending temporary internal border controls. The current spell, triggered on 1 May 2026, will run to 31 October, after which a new six-month window from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 will take effect. France continues to cite a ‘persistent composite threat’ comprising jihadist networks, rising antisemitic violence, migrant-smuggling rings on the Channel Coast and the security overlay of upcoming high-profile events such as the Paris Peace Forum in November. All land, air and sea borders with Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Spain and Italy remain affected. For travellers, the practical impact is targeted identity checks on cross-border trains, ferries and motorways, plus random screening inside Schengen airports—procedures that typically add 10-15 minutes but can stretch longer during peak periods or security alerts. Corporate compliance teams should note that the Schengen Borders Code obliges employers sending staff across affected borders to carry proof of assignment (A1 forms for posted workers, work contracts or invitation letters). Failure to present documentation can lead to on-the-spot fines even for EU nationals. The European Parliament continues to debate a draft reform that would cap successive extensions at two years, but until legislation changes France can lawfully roll over controls so long as it files the required reports—a reminder that the present regime is unlikely to disappear before the 2027 presidential election cycle.
