Using a récépissé to travel: French authorities clarify border-crossing rules
Following a surge in traveller queries, the government website Service-Public quietly updated its guidance on 6 October to confirm that holders of a récépissé— the receipt issued while a residence permit is being renewed—may leave and re-enter France as long as they also carry their expired permit and a valid passport. The clarification echoes longstanding Schengen provisions but had been inconsistently applied at smaller airports and land crossings. The English-language news outlet The Connexion collected testimonies from foreign residents who travelled successfully with the three-document bundle this summer. Passport officers at Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle and Bilbao reportedly accepted the récépissé without additional questions, while some travellers to the UK said British Border Force officials merely scanned their passports and ignored French paperwork altogether. Why it matters: delayed residence-permit renewals have become routine—processing averaged 117 days in 2025, according to a July 2026 report by the Défenseure des Droits. Many expatriate staff therefore spend months with only a récépissé as proof of status, raising concerns about business travel and re-entry. Clearer guidance reduces the risk of employees being stranded abroad or denied boarding. Best practice for mobility teams: ensure travellers carry photocopies of renewal-application receipts and, where possible, an employer letter explaining the assignment. For destinations outside the Schengen Area, check the inbound country’s rules; some carriers may still refuse boarding without a plastic residence card. Insurers also advise keeping digital copies of all documents in secure cloud storage in case originals are lost en route.
