French flight-crew unions call 5-day nationwide strike for 17-21 October
Five of France’s largest flight-crew unions—SNPL, UNSA-PNC, SNPNC-FO, SNGAF and UNAC—served formal notice on 7 October that they will stage a coordinated strike from 00:01 on Saturday 17 October until 23:59 on Wednesday 21 October. The walk-out, timed to coincide with the first weekend of France’s Toussaint school holidays, will cover all pilots and cabin-crew employed under French labour law, including those at Air France, Transavia, Corsair and dozens of regional or charter carriers. The dispute centres on new pension rules contained in France’s 2026 Social-Security Financing Law. From 1 January 2027, retirees who continue working before the legal retirement age will see every euro of earnings deducted from their state pension, and half of excess earnings clawed back between that age and 67. Unions argue the reform is “punitive and unsuited” to aviation careers that often end early for medical reasons. Negotiations have stalled, and the unions say only a statutory carve-out for the CRPN flight-crew pension fund will avert the strike. Under France’s 2012 minimum-service law, flight-crew intending to strike must declare themselves 48 hours in advance, allowing airlines to publish reduced timetables 24 hours before disruption begins. Passengers whose flights are cancelled remain entitled to rerouting or refunds under EU Regulation 261/2004. Whether cash compensation is payable is less clear: the European Court of Justice ruled in 2021 that compensation may be withheld if a strike targets state policy rather than airline management—a point likely to be contested once again. Corporate travel managers should closely monitor airline re-accommodation notices from 15 October onward. Travellers with non-refundable hotel and rail bookings should check purchase conditions now. Where possible, firms may wish to re-route via Amsterdam, Brussels or Frankfurt, or move critical meetings online. Given that Paris public-transport staff are already engaged in an unlimited strike, door-to-door journey times could lengthen significantly even for flights that do operate. If the unions maintain solidarity, France could lose thousands of flights over the five-day period—impacting cargo belly-hold capacity as well as passenger services. A late compromise remains possible, but contingency planning is advised.
