Spain reinstates Schengen border checks—Swiss business travellers transiting Iberian hubs advised to allow extra time
The European Commission’s live register of internal-border notifications shows that Spain reintroduced temporary controls at all air and sea borders with Italy from 8 October to 22 October 2026. While the measure is aimed at managing secondary migration flows, it has immediate knock-on effects for Swiss nationals and residents connecting through Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat and Palma de Mallorca. Under Schengen rules, Swiss citizens keep passport-free rights, but carriers must ensure that passengers heading to Italy have compliant travel documents. Swiss tour operators report that some airlines are already advising travellers to arrive an hour earlier at Spanish airports, and corporate-travel managers have flagged possible missed connections on tight itineraries. Travel-risk consultants emphasise that the Spanish move is not security-screening in the aviation sense but formal immigration control. Travellers holding residence permits from Switzerland or other Schengen states should carry them alongside passports to avoid manual verification delays. Holders of Swiss-issued C visas transiting on multi-segment tickets should print itineraries to demonstrate onward travel. The Spanish action also raises the prospect of reciprocity during high-profile events such as the November G20 summit in Geneva, where the Federal Council could apply Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code. Mobility teams should therefore monitor lead times not just for flights to Spain but for any Schengen-internal route that may adopt similar measures at short notice.
