Switzerland issues fresh travel advisory for Israel and Palestinian Territories as 420 nationals remain registered
The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) on 7 October 2026 published an updated advisory covering Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The notice comes on the third anniversary of the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks and stresses that the security situation remains “highly volatile” despite renewed cease-fire efforts. According to the FDFA, roughly 420 people with ties to Switzerland are still listed in the Travel Admin crisis registration system. Consular staff in Bern, Tel-Aviv and Ramallah remain in direct contact with those citizens. In its statement, the Federal Council repeated its condemnation of terrorism, reaffirmed Israel’s right to self-defence under international law and urged all parties to respect humanitarian norms. The ministry reminded travellers that airports and border crossings can close at short notice and that Swiss nationals must be prepared to arrange their own exit should the security environment deteriorate further. Special repatriation flights operated by SWISS in previous crises are currently not planned. For business travellers the FDFA’s wording has immediate consequences. Companies with personnel in Israel or Gaza must update duty-of-care protocols, maintain real-time evacuation plans and verify insurance coverage that includes war-risk exclusions. Employers are advised to ensure that staff travelling on secondment or short-term projects are enrolled in Travel Admin so that they can receive push notifications and rapid assistance. From a mobility-compliance perspective, firms should monitor Israel’s new NGO-registration rules, which the FDFA says also apply to Swiss humanitarian organisations. Visa extensions for foreign workers may be subject to longer processing times as Israeli authorities focus resources on security vetting. Swiss-based multinationals with local branches should build in additional lead time for work-permit renewals and cross-border freight movements, especially through ports such as Ashdod and Ben-Gurion airport where security screening has intensified. Finally, relocation and global-mobility teams should brief expatriates on contingency budgeting. Air-ticket prices between Tel-Aviv and Europe rose by more than 45 % during previous flare-ups, and landlords in safer areas such as Haifa and Eilat often demand six-month rent prepayments when tensions spike. The FDFA emphasises that any decision to leave the region is the traveller’s responsibility and costs are borne by the individual or employer, not the Swiss Confederation.
