Low-cost carrier Wizz Air announced on 9 October that it is deepening its commitment to Cyprus by adding a year-round Larnaca–Madrid route, reinstating twice-daily flights to Athens and resuming winter service to Abu Dhabi. The move follows the launch of Barcelona last year and positions Spain as the airline’s fastest-growing market from Cyprus. The schedule boost also raises frequencies to Thessaloniki, Bucharest, Venice and Wroclaw, giving Cyprus-based corporations and expatriates more same-day return options across Europe. Hermes Airports CEO Eleni Kaloyirou said the expanded network would help smooth out seasonality and support the government’s goal of year-round tourism. For mobility managers, the new services enlarge the pool of low-cost connections suitable for short-notice assignments and international project work, while the restored Abu Dhabi flights re-open a fast one-stop gateway to Asia and Australia via Wizz’s partner network. Wizz Air’s announcement comes as Cyprus negotiates a liberalised air-services agreement with the UAE and continues to court new long-haul carriers. Analysts say the added capacity could pressure fares, but also obliges authorities to accelerate planned upgrades to Larnaca’s passenger-processing areas ahead of the 2027 biometrics roll-out under the EU Entry/Exit System.
