160,000 + Travellers Already Registered for Huanggang “Joint Inspection” e-Lanes, Immigration Department Urges More Sign-ups
Ahead of Monday’s launch of the revamped Huanggang Port, the Hong Kong Immigration Department reported on 9 October that more than 160,000 residents have successfully enrolled for the new “collaborative inspection” automated channels using the department’s “Hong Kong e-Channel” mobile application. Registration opened only three days ago, underscoring strong public interest in the technology-enabled clearance process that will let users verify both Hong Kong and mainland identity documents at a single e-gate. Assistant Director (Control) Jacky Wong said officials aim to push the figure past 250,000 before opening day. The authority is running territory-wide social-media ads and has set up pop-up booths at major MTR interchanges this weekend to assist less tech-savvy travellers. Corporate mobility managers are being encouraged to circulate the registration QR code to staff who commute regularly to Shenzhen factories, R&D centres, and client sites. Early adopters stand to benefit from a “green channel” on 12 October: those who complete the smartphone enrolment and biometric capture in advance will gain access to dedicated e-lanes expected to clear passengers in under a minute, while walk-up registration counters may face long lines. The Immigration Department confirmed that passports, Home Return Permits, and Mainland Travel Permits for Taiwan Residents are all accepted credentials. Security experts note that the system’s encrypted facial templates are stored on government servers on each side of the border but are not shared in raw form, addressing privacy concerns raised by some civil-society groups. For businesses, the main operational takeaway is to incorporate the new e-lane option into travel-risk briefings and to remind employees that failed biometric matching will require manual inspection at traditional counters. The success of the enrolment drive will be a key metric when authorities decide whether to roll out joint-inspection e-channels at other crossings such as the Shenzhen Bay Bridge and the Heung Yuen Wai/Liantang port later in 2027.
