Hong Kong and Shenzhen authorities have confirmed that the completely rebuilt Huanggang Port will begin operations at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, 12 October. The new crossing replaces the ageing Lok Ma Chau–Huanggang facility and becomes Hong Kong’s only round-the-clock land checkpoint. It will debut the region’s first large-scale “collaborative inspection and joint clearance” model, allowing travellers to complete both Hong Kong and mainland immigration and customs formalities in a single stop before proceeding. Border officials on both sides told a joint press conference on 9 October that the port’s automated channels can process up to 50,000 passengers per hour—double the capacity of the old facility—and that around 100,000 crossings are expected daily once services bed in. The rebuild has integrated smart e-gates, AI-enabled surveillance, and facial-recognition turnstiles designed to cut clearance times for frequent business travellers to under 30 seconds. For corporates operating across the Greater Bay Area, the upgrade promises a significant reduction in door-to-door journey times between Hong Kong’s financial centre and Shenzhen’s tech hubs. Cross-border coach operators have already adjusted timetables, and logistics firms say overnight trucking routes will benefit from the new 24-hour goods-vehicle channels. Multinationals with staff on assignment in both cities are revising travel policies to encourage use of the streamlined port instead of the airport or ferry connections. The Security Bureau stressed that contingency drills with mainland counterparts have been completed. A joint command centre will monitor real-time passenger and vehicle flows, enabling rapid lane re-allocation during peak hours. Businesses should brief travelling employees to download Hong Kong Immigration’s “e-Channel” mobile app and complete pre-registration (see separate story) to avoid first-day queues. Looking ahead, the governments plan to extend the collaborative-inspection concept to other checkpoints, including the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge port, as part of the Greater Bay Area’s push toward “one-stop, two-checks” clearance. Firms with high cross-border mobility needs should watch for further pilot schemes that may offer additional efficiency gains or dedicated corporate lanes.
