Hong Kong and Shenzhen authorities will hold an inauguration ceremony on the Shenzhen side of the boundary at 10 a.m. on Sunday, 11 October, ahead of the official commissioning of the rebuilt Huanggang Port at 6:30 a.m. the following day. The event will be co-officiated by Hong Kong Chief Secretary Eric Chan and Shenzhen Mayor Qin Weizhong, underscoring the checkpoint’s importance to the Greater Bay Area’s integrated transport plan. The HK$35-billion project replaces the ageing Lok Ma Chau–Huanggang facilities—which have handled 24-hour coach traffic since 2003—with a modern, multi-storey terminal linked by elevated walkways to new customs and quarantine zones. A four-lane dedicated public-bus corridor and expanded coach park are expected to facilitate the return of overnight through-bus services that were suspended during the pandemic. Logistics players anticipate immediate benefits. Fresh-food importers told The Standard they plan to reroute half their Guangdong-Hong Kong shipments through the new port because the one-stop clearance model reduces spoilage risk. Several ride-hailing platforms have already opened cross-border booking options timed to the Monday launch. For human-resources departments, the port’s 24-hour status provides a redundancy option if flights into Hong Kong International Airport are delayed or seats are scarce; assignees can land at Shenzhen Bao’an Airport and transfer by road into Hong Kong in under 90 minutes. Employers should review insurance coverage, as the cross-boundary coach segment is governed by Mainland regulations until passengers pass through the joint clearance hall. Officials have warned that private-car quotas remain capped at 60,000 permits despite the new infrastructure. Companies seeking Corporate Hong Kong-Mainland Cross-Boundary Vehicle Permits should file applications early, as processing times currently average eight weeks following stringent background and insurance checks.
