Hong Kong issues travel alert for Belgium ahead of nationwide strikes and airport disruptions

The Security Bureau has updated its Outbound Travel Alert (OTA) for Belgium after local unions announced a series of nationwide strikes and large-scale demonstrations in Brussels scheduled for 9 October. The bureau warns that public-transport shutdowns and possible flight delays at Brussels Airport could affect Hong Kong residents transiting through or visiting the country. Travellers are advised to monitor Belgian news outlets, allow extra time to reach the airport and avoid protest areas. Those already in Belgium should exercise caution, keep travel documents on hand and register their whereabouts with the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit (tel. +852 1868 or via WhatsApp/WeChat). The Chinese Embassy in Belgium has also activated a consular hotline (+32 2763 2006) for emergencies. The alert remains at the lowest (amber) level, meaning travellers should monitor the situation but do not necessarily need to cancel plans. However, corporate security advisers say businesses with tight project timelines should consider rerouting staff via Amsterdam or Frankfurt if critical deadlines are at risk. Under Hong Kong’s OTA system, the government can escalate to red (“adjust travel plans and avoid non-essential travel”) or black (“avoid all travel”) if violence or disruption worsens. Insurance brokers remind travellers that some business-travel policies only pay disruption benefits once the alert reaches red level. Employers sending staff to EU institutions or trade fairs in Brussels next week are putting contingency plans in place, including remote-work options and flexible return tickets.
