From 1 January 2027, holders of Chinese official and service passports posted in Sweden will be able to renew or replace their documents entirely online through the “China Consular” mobile application, according to a notice published by the embassy on 13 October. The digital process lets applicants upload biometrics, track progress and book in-person fingerprint collection, eliminating multiple paper submissions. The move expands China’s global e-consular initiative that already covers ordinary-passport renewals in 45 countries. Officials say digitising official-passport workflows will cut processing time by 30 percent and reduce mailing errors, benefiting some 1,200 Chinese state employees and students in Sweden. For corporate mobility teams, the announcement hints that similar mobile renewals for ordinary passports could follow, easing document upkeep for Chinese assignees across Europe. HR should confirm that staff download the correct version of the app (iOS or Android) and retain original diplomatic notes from sending agencies, which remain mandatory at the final biometric stage in Stockholm. The embassy also reiterated China’s unilateral visa-free entry for Swedish tourists until 31 December 2026, encouraging two-way exchanges. Travel managers should therefore expect a modest uptick in Sweden–China traffic and ensure payment systems in China are ready for foreign bank cards in line with recent People’s Bank guidelines.
