Moody’s affirms Prague Airport’s Aa3 rating, paving way for border-control upgrades
Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) received a vote of confidence on 15 October 2026 as Moody’s Investors Service reaffirmed the operator’s long-term credit rating at Aa3 with a stable outlook. The rating agency cited the airport’s dominant market position, conservative financial policy and robust passenger recovery as key drivers behind the decision. Why does a credit rating matter for global mobility? Because it directly affects the airport’s ability to raise low-cost capital for capacity projects—including the €140 million expansion of Terminal 1’s border-control hall scheduled for 2027. That project is designed to absorb the additional processing time created by the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and to future-proof the airport for the launch of ETIAS in 2027. Airport management said the Aa3 affirmation will allow it to proceed with a planned multi-currency bond issue early next year, earmarked not only for the T1 upgrade but also for new self-service kiosks, e-gates for third-country nationals and a landside intermodal hub linking the long-awaited Prague airport rail spur. These improvements are critical for business travellers, who have complained of 30-minute passport-control queues during summer peaks since EES went live. The Czech Ministry of the Interior, which co-chairs the airport’s EES task force, welcomed the rating news, noting that efficient financing will keep the border-control project on track and help Czechia meet EU performance benchmarks. Travel-risk managers at multinational companies based in Prague told Global Mobility News that faster inbound processing is now a key KPI, given the city’s growing role as a regional headquarters location. For expatriate assignees and frequent flyers, the takeaway is simple: a strong balance sheet today means a smoother arrival experience tomorrow. Corporate travel buyers should factor the forthcoming construction phases into 2027 travel-policy guidance, as temporary walkway diversions may lengthen airside-to-landside transfer times.
