Thousands of protesters will take to the streets across Austria on Friday, 16 October, as part of a Fridays for Future action day, Austria’s motorists’ club ÖAMTC warned in an advisory published 15 October. Rallies are scheduled in Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz, Bregenz and Klagenfurt, with start times between 14:00 and 16:00. The largest march in Vienna begins at Praterstern and is expected to reach Ballhausplatz by 17:00, disrupting tram lines D, 1, 2, 5, 71, O and multiple bus routes as well as inner-city car traffic. In Graz, organisers plan a bicycle convoy moving from Europaplatz to Mariahilferplatz, while Salzburg demonstrators will march from the Hauptbahnhof to the historic centre. Police in several federal states have announced rolling road closures and advised motorists to avoid city centres. ÖBB reports that no mainline rail cancellations are expected but advises passengers to add extra transfer time at urban hubs. Vienna Airports’ ground-transport operator City Airport Train (CAT) will run normal schedules; however, travellers are urged to allow an additional 30 minutes for road transfers. For business travellers and global-mobility staff, the key takeaway is to reschedule meetings outside core city areas or switch to virtual formats. Employees arriving from abroad should be advised to use S-Bahn or regional trains rather than taxis for the last kilometre, and to verify hotel access routes. Travel-insurance policies that cover missed flights due to civil commotion may apply if delays exceed stipulated thresholds.
