Heavy congestion at Karawankentunnel as autumn travel peaks
Friday’s rush-hour brought kilometre-long queues on Austria’s A11 Karawanken Autobahn, the main alpine gateway towards Slovenia and Croatia. According to live traffic dashboards aggregated by Reisereporter, delays at the Karawankentunnel exceeded one hour in both directions during the early morning peak of 16 October 2026. The situation was aggravated by ongoing construction of the long-awaited second tunnel tube, border checks on the Slovenian side and a mix of leisure and commercial traffic heading south for the school break. The Karawankentunnel is notorious among business drivers and logistics operators: until the new bore opens in spring 2026, traffic still shares a single 7.8-km tube in alternating lanes, forcing authorities to employ ‘block release’ for trucks. Even minor incidents therefore cascade quickly. Freight forwarders report missed delivery slots in Ljubljana and Zagreb, while corporate travellers have scrambled to re-route via the Loibl- or Wurzenpass – options that are steep, slower and unsuitable for heavy vehicles. Austria’s motorway concessionaire ASFINAG advises companies to book digital Videomaut in advance and, where possible, schedule departures outside the critical Friday (14:00–20:00) and Saturday morning windows. Rail remains a viable alternative: ÖBB Nightjet and regional services between Villach and Ljubljana were running on time today and accept Interrail and most corporate rail passes. Long term, the second tube should double capacity and remove two-way traffic conflicts; however, final interior works mean full dual-tube operation will not start before 2029. Until then, mobility managers should continue to build generous buffers into itineraries and have contingency hotel options in Carinthia ready for crews caught behind enforced tunnel closures.
