Business travellers landing in Vienna should plan extra time for the journey downtown: a major upgrade of the inner-city S-Bahn trunk between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof began on 7 September 2026 and will last until October 2027. The works sever the main rail artery used by both the S7 commuter line and the privately run City Airport Train (CAT). To keep the airport corridor moving, CAT replaced its 16-minute rail shuttle with premium coaches on 24 August and today moved to its full peak schedule of up to five buses per hour. The 21-minute service runs non-stop between Vienna International Airport and Wien Mitte/Landstraße, where passengers can connect to underground lines U3 and U4. Early-morning departures now start at 05:30 from the city and 06:10 from the airport, with the dense 12-minute headway operating between 07:00 and 19:00. Long-distance Railjet and ICE services operated by ÖBB continue to run every 30 minutes to Vienna Central Station, but local trains no longer stop at the intermediate stations Rennweg or Wien Mitte. Travellers opting for the shortened S7 now have to transfer at St. Marx for trams 18 or 71 or bus 74A—adding at least ten minutes and an extra ticket to the trip. The Vienna Tourist Board warns that tour groups arriving during congress season should factor the detours into schedules; hotels in the city’s inner districts are advising guests to pre-book transfers. Corporate mobility managers may wish to update travel policies to reimburse the CAT bus surcharge or authorise airport taxis for tight itineraries. While the disruption is inconvenient, the Austrian Federal Railways say the modernisation will allow 200-metre platforms and a new signalling system that increases capacity by 20 percent once the line reopens. Until then, airlines using Vienna as a Central-European hub—among them Austrian Airlines, EVA Air and ANA—have updated their minimum connection time advisories, and the airport encourages passengers to arrive at least 30 minutes earlier than usual.
