The Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirmed on 15 October that the REVISIO project, which modernises Finland’s national Visa Information System (VISA), has received €863,550 from the EU’s Border Management and Visa Policy Instrument (BMVI). Running from September 2026 to August 2029, REVISIO will align Finland’s platform with the re-engineered EU-wide Visa Information System as mandated by Regulations (EU) 2021/1133 and 2021/1134. Key deliverables include biometric enrolment upgrades, automated cross-checks against SIS, Europol and Interpol databases, and a single technical access point that will eventually support the shift to digital (QR-code) visas. The project team, led by Tarja Nylander, will also integrate Business Finland’s start-up-visa assessments directly into the Immigration Service’s workflow, reducing the current two-step process to one. For companies, the overhaul promises shorter lead times for Schengen visas filed at Finnish missions worldwide and more consistent decision-making—a long-standing complaint from HR teams that rotate staff between Helsinki and non-EU hubs such as Singapore or Delhi. The Ministry aims to pilot the new modules at the New Delhi embassy in Q3 2027 before a global roll-out in 2028. Stakeholders should note that enhanced interoperability means any negative data (overstay flags, unpaid fines) lodged in other EU systems will surface instantly during Finnish visa adjudication. Travellers with prior immigration infractions elsewhere in Schengen may therefore face higher refusal risks once REVISIO goes live.
