German federal police have launched an investigation after a vehicle apparently rammed through a perimeter fence at Leipzig/Halle Airport late on Saturday night, forcing authorities to close the north runway and step up patrols across the site. Officers discovered the damaged section shortly before 23:00 local time on 17 October. An initial sweep found no suspicious objects or unauthorised persons, but police said on Sunday morning that the incident is being treated as a potential security threat until forensic work is complete. The airport kept its south runway open, allowing cargo carrier DHL and early-morning passenger services to depart, yet several flights were rerouted or delayed while safety checks continued. The breach comes only two months after investigators found an explosives-laden drone near the same airport—an attack German officials blamed on Russian operatives. While no link has been established, the fresh incident will add pressure on airport operators to harden physical security measures as Europe’s Entry/Exit System brings additional data-collection duties to front-line staff. For mobility managers Leipzig’s scare is a reminder that secondary hubs can quickly become chokepoints for supply chains; DHL handles a major share of its European express freight at the airport, and any prolonged runway outage could ripple through just-in-time logistics networks. Travellers with early-week itineraries via LEJ should monitor flight status closely and allow extra transit time in case ramp areas remain cordoned off. Airport operator Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG said it is reviewing CCTV footage and will cooperate fully with federal authorities. Results of the inquiry are expected later this week, alongside an assessment of whether perimeter-intrusion sensors need upgrading across Germany’s regional airports.
